Compassion is “sympathetic concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others” (Oxford Dictionary 2018). So often, we are compassionate towards others, and yet we don’t offer ourselves the same level of concern.
Teachers serve students in the hope of a brighter future, which goes beyond themselves. Being a teacher is more than a job for most of us. We are creating a better future by caring for and educating the next generation.
As teachers, sometimes we are our own worst enemy when it comes to the expectations we place on ourselves. We care about what we do, we strive to meet the needs of our students and the job has no end.
“It is teachers who have created positive teacher-student relationships that are more likely to have the above average effects on student achievement.” John Hattie
